Natural Stone Cleaning, Polishing & Sealing

Natural stone and ceramic tile are two of the most abused and overlooked floor coverings in the home simply because of the time involved in cleaning them. However, when cleaning them you need to keep in mind that the two are different.  Below are some tips on how to care for your natural stone floor so that it will remain as beautiful as the day it was installed.

Generally when talking about a natural stone floor we are talking about a marble, travertine, limestone, slate or even a terrazzo. Household cleaners not specifically formulated for natural stone are not recommended. These cleaners can etch a natural stone floor.  Cleaners with lemon, vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or any cleaner that is on the acid side of the pH scale will etch your natural stone floors.  These natural stones are made up of calcium carbonate and any acid will dissolve calcium carbonate.  This can cause your floors to look dull, scratched or etched.

Using cleaning products that are specifically made for natural stone, when doing your routine cleaning, will help extend the time in between professional natural stone floor polishing and cleaning.  These products should be readily available at retailer that sells and installs natural stone flooring.

Another thing that can really dull a natural stone floor is dry soil brought in off of your shoes.  If the dry soil is not constantly and diligently kept off the natural stone floor then it will dull the appearance of the stone.

The good news is that if you have any of these issues already with your natural stone floor then a professional polishing and cleaning can restore your natural stone floors to like new condition in most cases.  Once the stone is polished and cleaned you will want to make sure that you get it sealed.  This will help prevent any staining of the stone or grout in the future.  Most professional stone cleaners can also put you on a maintenance program that will help ensure that your natural stone floors always look as beautiful as the day you installed them.
